Day 2 — Good things happen when you just go up and talk to people

14 12 2008

After the social networking panel ended, my buddy Steve and I walked upstairs to talk to the people working the sponsor booths. I had an itch to talk to Sonicbids, so I approached the table and started talking to their rep.

Ropeadope had initially corresponded with Sonicbids to have a bulk account of our bands, so we could get our artists a discount. I asked Benjy, the Sonicbids rep, to explain to me just exactly how the account would be set up and maintained.

In the process of talking, he had a clever idea of using Sonicbids to host a contest to win a Ropeadope Digital contract, which was genius. Ropeadope would decide who gets the contract from the list of bands that apply to the contest that Sonicbids will host. In theory, it’s a win-win situation for both Sonicbids and Ropeadope. This is EXACTLY the type of symbiotic partnership I spoke about earlier.

Had I not just gone up to him, this would never have happened, so not being open to talk to people you don’t know will only close doors for you.

Be bold. F.E.A.R. nothing. The worst that can happen is some guy says, “Fuck off”. In which case, you get the last laugh when you’re on the road to #1 and he doesn’t get to tag along.
