Day 2 — moe. are right where they want to be

15 12 2008

After talking to Benjy from Sonicbids, I went to a get a quick bite then made my way back in time for “Inmates Running the Asylum”, which was about how managers and artists are guiding a band’s career without the majors.

I was most interested in talking to the manager from moe. because, despite my boredom with most jambands in recent years, moe. was an extremely important part of my musical development. I saw moe. when I was 15 at the Tower Theatre for Halloween and they played Dark Side of the Moon with Wizard of Oz projected on the sides of the theatre (and not to mention the fact that Rob (bass) was dressed as Dorothy). It was a show my friend and I still talk about to this day.

More importantly, moe. is a band that has created a brand around themselves and are completely comfortable with their place as their manager assured us. I’ve seen too many bands get the itch to be greater than they are and get lost on their way to the “top”. They get too hungry that they starve themselves. moe. did the major deal, left after two albums, and that experience solidified their desire to have complete control over their career, which I respect immensely.
