After my panels, I went back to Williamsburg to relax before Carlon was playing the Trash Bar for CMJ. Playing Brooklyn during CMJ can be a blessing or a curse. It all depends on if there is a buzz band or headlining band playing Brooklyn that same night because no one from Manhattan will come to Brooklyn to see some band they’ve never heard of when there’s 10+ venues in the Lower East Side alone to keep them occupied for the night.
That being said, about fifteen people came to see Carlon. That didn’t discourage them though. They’re in it for the long haul and see a gig as a practice in front of people. They have a ways away until they dissect their studio material and rearrange it to be played live, so I commend them on sticking with it. In addition, they record every show, so they listen to it and figure out what needs to be improved for the next show.
After the show, Jared (bass), Ryan (guitar, vocals), Ryan’s brother whose name escapes me, and myself went to a bar to talk about the band and what they need to do to get them to the next level. I pride myself in having audacity of telling a band this or that needs to be changed and they may hate me initially, but in the end, they’ll (hopefully) thank me.
