Night 3 — Show hopping 101

22 12 2008

This night brought to light the true meaning of CMJ for me. It isn’t people scratching their heads all day at panels and wondering what the next move is. It’s people like myself stumbling into bars and venues across town and seeing the next “it” band in the making.

The pick of night had to be Brighton MA who are actually from Chicago. Jared Pollack, from Carlon, brought to my attention their distinct Neil Diamond qualities on top of the Wilco and Dylan meet U2 sound I had initially noted. After the show ended, I exchanged words (and CD’s) with the band by their van parked outside Arlene’s Grocery, and went on my way. I want them to come to the east coast again real bad.

We walked into the Living Room and I noticed Jon Topper, moe.’s manager, who I had met the day before. I went up to him to say hello because just like bands, people need to give multiple impressions to be remembered. I made sure to approach subtly because he was in a conversation with Howie Schnee, co-owner of Sullivan Hall (formerly Lions Den). Howie told Mike from Carlon and I about all the changes he’s made to Sullivan. We made our way out and headed home musically fulfilled for the night after a brief stint at Piano’s where I got a free USB drive (free works for venues as much as bands).

However, the night wouldn’t have been complete without bumping into Benjy from Sonicbids at this Lower East Side Turkish joint at like 1am…falafel brings people together.
