5 New Bands (Day Before Bday Edition)

4 01 2010

Mumford & Sons – Another slamdunk from Glass Note.  I like to call this power folk because of it’s energizing and soulful sound.  It makes me want to fist pump to a banjo.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow – These Philly natives’ myspace says that they play  “dreamy pop music”, but sometimes dreams can take a turn for the worst.  Songs range from 10 seconds to 10 minutes, but the truth is that interludes are a long lost art for most albums these days, so I’m glad they’re bringing it back.

Chiddy Bang – Hip-Hop…from Philly???  Can’t be.  BUT these college freshman aren’t trying to compete with or emulate The Roots.  They’re able to pull off sampling Sujfan Stevens and Radiohead.  ALSO, they have killlller live show.

Here We Go Magic – Secretly Canadian is more and more becoming one of my favorite indie labels.  These guys (and gal) are all over the place.  They can sound like a freak combination of Atlas Sound, Paul Simon, My Bloody Valentine, and Tortoise (with vocals of course).  I will def be at their Music Hall gig.

Do you think you’re band is better than these guys?  Email Me (subject:  5 New Bands) with one song that defines you and a brief one or two sentence description of your sound.  No more.  No less.
