A very suitable analogy

28 04 2010

I was talking to my friend Jon on gchat a little while ago.  He recently had a meeting with a larger record label to develop iPhone apps for them.  It dawned on me that that behemoth did some house cleaning at one of its labels, so they could save money and spend it on innovative music tech companies such as the one Jon works for.  That made this analogy for the music industry come to mind (note – I completely made this up and is not based on an older analogy):

In the shipping industry, it’s the companies who invest in planes that make it through the drought.

So now the question is:  what is the plane for the music industry?

Show Me the Money

26 04 2010

I gotta show some love for my good friend and mentor Andy Blackman Hurwitz.  He’s starting a new law firm in Philly and is throwing a huge party/panel on Sunday May 16 to help celebrate.  Cop tickets here.  And for more info, check out the flyer below.

5 New Bands (4/22)

22 04 2010

Rocco DeLuca and the Burden – Daniel Lanois produced his most recent album, so that sets his music at a high bar.  Also, he reminds me of Jeff Buckley meets Jack White.

Tallest Man On Earth – I skipped his set when he opened for Bon Iver because I thought his name sounded stupid…I completely regret that decision.  His music sounds like he’s a soulful, vagabond musical storyteller version of Dylan.

ARMS – I met Todd on a bus at 2AM in Austin.  He was in Harlem Shakes, but left to pursue his own music.  I’m glad because he’s made some awesome indie rock.  AND they’re gonna play my first backyard brunch concert.

Pattern is Movement – I’ve known about them for a while since my buddy Chris is 1/2 of the band, but it only recently hit me how AMAZING they are.   Soulful, bizarro, indie rock that sounds wayyyy more epic than music should sound coming from two people.

Givers – They sound like (the few good parts) of Vampire Weekend meets Local Natives with a light dash of Dirty Projectors for good measures.  They’re playing a free show at Brooklyn Bowl on May 5.  Who else is down?

If you think your band should be featured for 5 New Bands, please send me a track using the amazing Soundcloud (note:  look at top right of this page and click on the Soundcloud image).

Don’t drink aaaaand……..tweet?

20 04 2010

On Friday, my buddy Andy won free tickets to see The Hold Steady at Music Hall of Williamsburg for the following night (Saturday).  Prior to the show, I had had a “long afternoon” with two of my best friends from college.  Needless to say, there was a fair amount of drinking involved.  However, I had to keep going strong since the Hold Steady weren’t playing until midnight or so (note: they had an earlier show across the bridge at Bowery Ballroom at 8pm).

That being said, by 9pm I was pretty out of it and tweeted something before the show that I thought nothing of…until yesterday morning when I received scores of emails saying how much of an idiot I was for being quoted in Brooklyn Vegan’s recap of the show.  For those that don’t know, Brooklyn Vegan is a fairly prominent music blog with a large readership and influence as a tastemaker, so a lot of people read it.

I was embarrassed at first, then mad at the writer for using my name, and then I began to have a sense of humor about it all.  I said what I said and once it’s out there on the Internet, I can’t control where it goes, which is both liberating and frightening at the same time.  There’s no denying that it was hilariously stupid of me and that this the balance of the universe kicking me in ass.

HOWEVER, it got even weirder because I got an email from Twitter saying that this guy was following me (hint:  look at his name).  Since then, we have been emailing back and forth finding more similarities between each other.

To top it off, my soon-to-be roomie Nicole called me around 8PM last night to tell me that I’m famous for being on Brooklyn Vegan.

Such a bizarre day yesterday was.  But it taught me how small the world…especially when you’re drunk and make a fool of yourself on Twitter.  So please, before you login onto twitter.com or Ubertwitter or Twitterberry, think how many drinks you’ve had.  If it’s not safe to drive, it’s probably not safe to tweet.  You might end up on Brooklyn Vegan.

I’m looking for some new clients..anyone interested?

19 04 2010

I just got back from a 50 mile bike ride and got thinking.  Now that SXSW and a few other things are behind me, I’m looking to take on more clients for consulting.  “Consulting for what?”  Well that’s a good question.  Consulting for social media, creating and developing a YouTube music series, street team development and tips on self-managing it, writing newsletters and building the list, touring strategy, business plan editing for music tech startups…and the list goes on.

I don’t have set fees and spend a lot of working with the client to determine what works for his or her budget.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me to say hello and include as much of the following as you can:

  • Links to your web presence
  • 2 sentences about your music/company/idea
  • What sort of service(s) you are seeking?
  • Whether you live in New York or are going to be there anytime soon (not a deal breaker if you’re outside, but I like to meet in person at least once)

The perfect marriage (to me atleast): Food and music

10 04 2010

My friend Virginia hipped me to the new Dr. Martens campaign for their 50th Anniversary and I loved it so much that I wrote about it on Soundctrl’s blog.  The marriage of fashion and music is an organic fit for her, so it got me thinking about what I marry music to in my own life.  Simple answer:  food.

For anyone who knows me well enough, the only other thing I talk about besides music is food.  I can’t play an instrument, but I can cook.  And if you’ve been lucky enough, you’ve come over for one of my weekly pizza nights or other meals I cook for my friends.  My old buddy Josh had this to say about my mussels.

Last Tuesday, I had a few friends and family over my apartment for the first outdoor pizza night.  To signify the nice weather, Josh and his singer Tim came over to play a few songs on dual acoustic guitars.   After they finished playing, I could hear claps coming from other houses surrounding mine.  It was very encouraging that what I was doing was innovative and worth developing.  As a result, I plan on having Saturday afternoon concerts in my backyard over the summer.  Ideally, I plan on having them filmed and have the musicians cook the meal with me.  Who knows where the idea can go from there…maybe have guest chefs?  I’m excited!

Do you have any band suggestions???  Contact me ASAP.  Note:  the music doesn’t have to be unplugged in nature, but must be creatively adaptable to an unplugged environment.

Neutral Uke Hotel

9 04 2010

Neutral Milk Hotel is one of those iconic late 90′s cult bands that spawned a generation of indie bands from The Decemberists to The National.  Their album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a concept album about a series of reoccurring dreams that the lead singer had, oddly enough, about Anne Frank.

To take it one step further, Shawn Fogel has decided to play the WHOLE album on ukulele as evidenced by the song below:
