Updates on my Backyard Brunch Sessions (5/27)

27 05 2010

First off, The Press were awesome on Saturday for anyone who was there (you know who you are).  BUT the real beauty of the performance was the makeshift drum set that me and drummer Chuck put together from all the crap in my backyard…but more on that later.  To get a taste, here’s a Twitpic that my buddy Walt took.

There have been tons of submissions for my Sonicbids contest.  However, so far, there has been one that has really shined:  Wisconsin rocker Tom Vollman.  However, that does not mean I’m only choosing singer-songwriter types.  I want diversity in submissions.  ANY band that thinks that they can adapt their sound to an unplugged performance should apply and would most certainly gain a lot from the opportunity.  Don’t contemplate for too long though because the deadline is June 21.

LASTLY, I would like to confirm that Team B will be playing in June.  For anyone who is not familiar, it is the new balkan/rock project featuring members of Beirut, Antibalas, and the Arcade Fire touring band.  Fearless leader Kelly Pratt told me that they’re gonna bring ukuleles (yes…plural), percussion, trumpets, a tuba, and an accordion.  It should make for an incredibly unique backyard performance.

Stay tuned next week for more updates.

TechCrunch Disrupt Conference

25 05 2010

I’ve been there for the past two days and have seen some incredible things and met some truly amazing people.  However, nothing was as funny as Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz telling Michael Arrington, the Co-Editor of TechCrunch, to fuck off.

For more info, check out my recap on SoundCtrl.

Inspiration is viral

21 05 2010

I was talking to my friend Barbara yesterday.  She told me that I inspired her to seek sponsorship for this project she’s working on called the Philly Folk Parade.  It’s a collective of Philly folk musicians including herself, Hezekiah Jones, Chris Kasper, Birdie Busch, Cowmuddy, Andrew Lipke, Sisters 3, and MORE.

My response to her:  “Inspiration gets passed back and forth.  I do what I can bc someone inspired me somewhere along the line.  That sort of positive energy is viral.”

Call me hippie all you want (even those days are LOOONG gone for me), but I honestly believe that if we surround ourselves with positive, supportive and inspiring people, we will grow together.  This is particularly why I have been so supportive of Barbara for the Folk Parade…she’s essentially creating an Okayplayer for Philly’s vibrant folk scene.  It will work because they’re helping each other out and the music is pretty damn good.

So if you’re ever inspired, pass it on.

Updates on my Backyard Brunch Sessions (5/20)

20 05 2010

Things have been going amazing.  A lot of bands have shown interest in this experiment I have been developing the past month or so, but I’ll unveil them a couple at a time.  This weekend I have a set from The Press.  The band I initially had backed out, so my buddy Omer came to the rescue and recommended these guys.  We’ll see how they sound unplugged…but so will all of you once I get the videos up.

The Sonicbids contest is up and running with a lot of interesting music coming my way.  Next week, I will be sharing the top 3 from the first 2 weeks.  Remember:  the deadline for submissions is June 21, so you have time to think it over if this opportunity is right for you and if your music would work for this out-of-the-box unplugged setting.

Two more additions to list of performers:

  1. Kelli Scarr (Moby’s former lead singer)
  2. Person L (lead by former singer/bassist of The Starting Line)

Keep reading next week to find out all the news as it unfolds.

Best movie of the year (so far)

19 05 2010

When I got home last night from seeing Exit Through the Gift Shop, I knew I wouldn’t be going right asleep because my internal debate was too strong.  Check out the trailer below or, preferably, go to the movies and see the whole thing at one of these theatres.  And Banksy, the faceless street art godfather, has been on a “US tour” to promote the movie in the only way he could and was just in NYC.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, Banksy was the director rather the main “star” of the film.  The documentary tracks the evolution of Thierry Guetta, the vintage store owner to Thierry the (fake) street art filmmaker to transforming himself seemingly overnight into Mister Brainwash.  (Note:  please DON’T read further if you haven’t seen it) Read the rest of this entry »

5 New Bands (5/18)

18 05 2010

Fashawn – Probably the best new hip-hop artist (new to me at least) I’ve heard in a long time (thanks Alex).

Anna von Hausswolff – Lykke Li came out of Twitter hiding to recommend her and now I know why.  Part Portishead.  Part Stevie Nicks.  Overall just really eerie, but likable at the time.

Zeus – Most surprising show I’ve seen since White Denim.  They’re like Dr. Dog’s long lost Canadian brother.  AND they played a cover of Genesis that made me (sort of) not hate Phil Collins.

Keepaway – Another Animal Collective wannabe.  EP release party on tonight at Mercury Lounge.

Harper Blynn – They’re formally Pete and J.  They sound like Guster, but they’re not fake hippies.

If you think your band should be featured for 5 New Bands, please send me a track using the amazing Soundcloud (note:  look at top right of this page and click on the Soundcloud image).

Broken Social Scene aka Why I’m So Happy

11 05 2010

Saturday night, I went to see my favorite living band for the seventeenth time, Broken Social Scene, at the 550 capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg.  It’s not that they’re the most talented band or make the most innovative music.  Rather, they were the band for me throughout college.  Every person of their 20+ person rotational band does something that can’t be taken away because each layer tells part of a song’s story.   Rocking out on one song and then ambient instrumental the next.  Their musical diversity, their energy, and their outlook on life kept me hyper interested.   At the end of the show, bandleader Kevin Drew addressed the audience:  “We are your friends.  We are Broken Social Scene and we believe in you.”

But let me take it back 4 hours when I first got to the venue with my friends Alex and VirginiaRead the rest of this entry »
