Thank you for making a post about this; it needed to be said! The rise of the web has certainly democratized the music industry, and with this transformation comes both pros and cons. A major pro is that artists now have total control over their own careers, and are no longer dependent on record labels to distribute and promote their music. However, on the flip side, artists have become a little too hungry and desperate for any and all free promotion they can get their hands on. And, because they are doing all the marketing and promoting on their own, many of them seem to be going about it the wrong way. Don't get me wrong being proactive and getting yourself out there is definitely taking the right initiative, but there is just a certain way to go about doing it as to avoid stepping on toes. A general rule of thumb is to pitch what you want to be promoted in a way that is relevant and newsworthy to the person you are asking to post about you. Another route to promote your music , of course, is to take advantage of the great online resources, promotional, tools and services like uPlaya.com to help you get exposure.
